Lake Sumter MPO Vision Zero Safety Action Plan
Vision Zero Safety Action Plan for the Lake~Sumter MPO Area
Vision Zero seeks to eliminate traffic deaths and severe injuries. More than 45 people are killed and 250 are seriously injured every year on roads in Lake and Sumter counties. That’s a higher rate than Florida — or the nation – and it’s unacceptable. Recognizing that these crashes are preventable, Lake-Sumter MPO (MPO) is partnering with the University of Central Florida (UCF)to lead a coordinated planning effort to eliminate these crashes in Central Florida by 2050.
In February 2018, the Lake-Sumter MPO Governing Board adopted targets of zero traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries and has annually renewed this commitment in subsequent years. This concept, known as Vision Zero, promotes a Safe System Approach grounded in several key principles: death and serious injury are unacceptable, humans make mistakes, humans are vulnerable, responsibility is shared, safety is proactive, and redundancy is crucial. This Safety Action Plan will provide a system-level approach to safety using the Safe System Approach to create a holistic strategy focused on eliminating fatal and serious injury crashes to include the five key elements: Safer Road Users, Safer Vehicles, Safer Roads, Safer Speeds, and Post Crash Care.
To be successful, this Vision Zero Safety Actions Plans requires partnerships and collaboration between governments, local organizations, the Florida Department of Transportation, and the community.
There are many ways you can contribute directly or indirectly to making Central Florida safer.
HELP IDENTIFY SAFETY ISSUES
Sometimes crash data doesn’t tell the whole story – and that’s where you can help make transportation safer! You can use our survey tool to help identify problem areas. We’re especially interested in experiences you have on our local network. You can also identify other areas where you feel unsafe traveling. Please take the time to complete the Community Survey at the link below, share the survey with others, be part of the solution.
Vision Zero Action Plan Community Survey
This Vision Zero Safety Action Plan can benefit everyone in Central Florida – especially the most vulnerable road users. We also support the companion plans developed by Lake and Sumter counties and cities, as well as the Florida Department of Transportation District 5 Safety Strategic Plan. Working together, these plans will help our region achieve the vision of safer, more accessible, and more convenient travel.
This Vision Zero initiative results from a coordinated planning effort led by the MPO and UCF, in partnership with local governments and the Florida Department of Transportation.
