The purpose of the Lake~Sumter MPO Horizon Awards is to encourage and recognize excellence in planning, partnership and public service. The awards are to recognize efforts during 2011 and the awards coincide with the annual installation of MPO officers. Nominations must be received by January 6, 2012 to be considered for this year’s awards.

The following awards will be selected by MPO Staff:

Horizon Award: Regional Partner
MPO staff will select from various regional transportation partners, which include governmental entities and transportation agencies. The award will be based upon the strongest demonstration of partnership in furthering the goals and plans of the MPO.

Horizon Award: Volunteer of the Year
MPO staff will select from the various committees and boards of the MPO the individual who has demonstrated the greatest commitment of time and energy to the goals and plans of the MPO.

Horizon Award: Outstanding Achievement
MPO staff will select the most influential individual or team to have furthered the goals or plans of the MPO. The award is intended to recognize the person or group that has most demonstrated the MPO’s mission of “Promoting Regional Transportation Partnerships.” The award may be based on a specific project or on overall efforts in the area of transportation.

Nominations for the following awards are encouraged. Please feel free to nominate multiple projects however please only nominate one project per form submittal.

Nominations must be received by January 6, 2012 to be considered for this year's awards.

Nomination-based award will recognize a local project that furthers the transportation goals of the community and of the MPO. Candidate projects may include physical improvements, provision of transportation services, capital projects, land or right-of-way acquisition, approved studies or designs, updates to comprehensive plans or land development regulations and intergovernmental coordination. Horizon Award: Large Municipality Eligible MPO members include municipalities of more than 5,000 in population. Nomination-based award will recognize a local project that furthers the transportation goals of the community and of the MPO. Candidate projects may include physical improvements, provision of transportation services, capital projects, land or right-of-way acquisition, approved studies or designs, updates to comprehensive plans or land development regulations and intergovernmental coordination. Horizon Award: Keep Lake Moving Eligibility is extended to county departments and divisions. Nomination-based award will recognize a Lake County project that furthers the transportation goals of the community and of the MPO. Candidate projects may be in areas of Growth Management, Public Works, Public Transportation or Administration. Candidate projects may include physical improvements, provision of transportation services, capital projects, land or right-of-way acquisition, approved studies or designs, updates to comprehensive plans or land development regulations and intergovernmental coordination. Horizon Award: Keep Sumter Moving Eligibility is extended to county departments and divisions. Nomination-based award will recognize a Sumter County project that furthers the transportation goals of the community and of the MPO. Candidate projects may be in areas of Growth Management, Public Works, Public Transportation or Administration. Candidate projects may include physical improvements, provision of transportation services, capital projects, land or right-of-way acquisition, approved studies or designs, updates to comprehensive plans or land development regulations and intergovernmental coordination. Horizon Award: Exemplary Planning Policy Eligibility is extended to all of our member governments. Nomination-based award will recognize an action with regard to comprehensive planning policy that supports the multi-modal policies of the MPO. Candidate policies that tie transportation with land use, community design and economic development will be given the highest consideration. Horizon Award: Exemplary Planning Project Eligibility is extended to all of our member governments. Nomination-based award will recognize a project that supports the multi-modal policies of the MPO. Candidate projects can be public or private. Highest consideration will be given to projects already constructed however, phased projects moving toward construction will be considered.
